Bathing
the lush green valleys of Punalur with rich melodies for almost
eight decades, Sree Thayagaraja Smaraka Sangeetha Kalalayam
delivers the very essence of life through performing arts.

The
beginnings of this institute took shape in the first quarter
of the twentieth century. It took a definite shape in the
name of Thyagaraja Smaraka Sangeetha Vidyalayam under the
auspices of its founder Sri Ramaswami Bhagavathar in 1928
Under his guidance the institute grew from strength to strength. |
| Sri
Ramaswami Bhagavathar's perseverance and undaunting efforts
paid when in 1948 the institute was recognized by the Kerala
Sangeetha Nataka Akademi. It was then renamed as Sangeetha
Kalalayam. Its fame spread far and wide and it melodies were
echoed across the subcontinent, until in 2000 the Delhi Central
Sangeet Natak Akademi gave it due recognition. As the management
of the institute passed through the capable hands of three
generations the institute the institute grew in stature and
expanded to various other fields of performing arts.
After the demise of Sri Ramaswami Bhagavathar in 1969, his
wife Smt. Lakshmikutty Bhagavathar took over the reins and
served the institute as its principal. In 1959 S R Thyagarajan,
son of erstwhile Sri Ramaswami Bhagavathar took over as its
principal. He was a student of the Thiruvananthapuram Sree
Swathi Thirunal Music College. It was during his terms that
the institute received several awards. |
Since
2000 the institute has been flourishing under able leadership
of its present principal, the grandson of Sri Ramaswami Bhagavathar,
Sangeetha Sree Punalur T.S. Jairaj(Soorya Saena) |
This
institute today has bagged several prestigious awards and
is one of the best schools of fine arts. It has over a thousand
students studying various disciplines. With highly qualified
faculty and well furnished classrooms the students here enjoy
the best. A well stocked library and a wide variety of musical
instruments also add to the harmony of the settings. |
